Back In My Day Basic Airsoft Guns Used To Cost A Lot…

Nowadays, players have so many options at such good prices and yet there are still complainers out there… I guess everything is relative.

Back when I got into airsoft around the mid to late 90’s just about any stock AEG that I could buy was priced around $300-$360. Now, that didn’t include a charger, it didn’t include a battery, the only thing that came stock with the gun was a high capacity magazine.

Using the “Wayback Machine” (You can google it, it’s pretty cool), I was able to calculate the exact price when I purchased my Tokyo Marui AK-47 way back around September 20, 2000. Here is the breakdown:

How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love CQB

The beginnings of my airsoft career were rather modest. I began by playing paintball at a field called Target Zone Paintball on Poso Creek just outside of Bakersfield, CA. After getting into paintball and dropping most of my disposable income from my job at a local chevron gas station, I signed up for a subscription to Action Pursuit Games, which was in my opinion the best paintball magazine available at the time.

That said, after reading a few issues I noticed an ad for airsoft guns in the back pages and was utterly amazed. From then on it wasn’t about whether or not I should get into airsoft, it was more about the how and the when.

The Greatest Time I Ever Got Overrun

Ok, to preface this story I need to explain why I wasn’t able to attend Lion Claws II, which was definitely a learning experience.

I, like many other airsoft enthusiasts apparently, plan what gear and guns I’m taking to an operation long before I ever buy a ticket and, as such, I sometimes miss out on the operation because I WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO GET A TICKET.

This is exactly what happened in the run up to Lion Claws II. I showed up at my local airsoft store with a list of gear I felt I needed for Operation Lion Claws II and the conversation went something like this:

Salesperson: Wow Bob, you’re really stocking up this time. Gearing up for a big game?

Me: Oh yeah! I went to Lion Claws I last year and it was awesome. I’m totally going to Lion Claws II this year.

Salesperson: Oh, did you get your ticket?

Me: No, why?

Salesperson: Well, it just sold out yesterday.

Me: You’re kidding?!

Salesperson: Nope, see? [He turns the computer screen around so I can see that the event is sold out.]

Me: 🙁

Salesperson: Do you still need all this gear?

Me: Yeah… I guess I’ll just get 2 bags of BB’s instead of 4, but I still want everything else. (more…)

Operation Lion Claws I

My First John Lu Operation

Firstly, I would like to say how thankful I am to John Lu for deciding to have the first Operation Lion Claws right near where I grew up just outside of Bakersfield, CA at what used to be known as Target Zone paintball right along Poso Creek. I honestly had no idea how big of a series this was going to be when I first signed up, I just remember feeling overjoyed that Col. Danny Mcknight was not only going to be commanding a force of airsofters in a mock battle but that he would be doing so in Kern County!

My First Milsim Operation

My first foray into airsoft milsim operations began about 2 years after I first discovered airsoft. While I was searching online forums for a new shotgun load out I was working on, I came across a very interesting poster for something called Operation Iron Angel. You can see a few of the original advertisements below.

Now, as a testament to how long ago Operation Iron Angel occured, the video that came out for this operation was released… on VHS.
